UQ mineral and mining engineering leads QS subject rankings blitz

The University of Queensland ranks at number three in the world in two subject areas and highest in Australia in another two, according to the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2017.

UQ ranks at number one, two or three in Australia in a total of 14 subject areas.

It is ranked first nationally for environmental sciences and agriculture and forestry, and shines on the world stage at rank three globally in mineral and mining engineering and in sports-related subjects.

Six UQ subject areas rank at number two in Australia. They include the global stars –  mineral and mining engineering and sports-related subjects – along with biological sciences, materials science, communication and media studies, hospitality and leisure management,.

A further six UQ subject areas rank at number three in Australia. They are archaeology, chemical engineering, pharmacy and pharmacology, veterinary science, education, and statistics and operational research.

Globally, UQ is in the world’s top 20 universities in six subject areas: mineral and mining engineering (third), sports-related subjects (third), environmental sciences (12th), hospitality and leisure management (12th), education (14th), and agriculture and forestry (19th).

Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Peter Høj said UQ continued to perform strongly in the QS rankings in the face of fierce international competition.

“UQ’s strong showing in subjects such as mining, sport, the environment, tourism management, and education reflects the breadth and calibre of interdisciplinary expertise that is creating positive change in the world,” Professor Høj said.

“For our students, UQ’s global standing in these fields and the opportunity to learn directly from leading academics will help them build agile and meaningful careers and, in turn, transform the world around them.

“It is not surprising that so many international students choose to study here.”

In the past year UQ has been confirmed as the top institute in Australia in the Nature Index 2016 Australia and New Zealand; placed 43rd globally and third in Australia in the Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities; and jumped 22 places in the prestigious Academic Ranking of World Universities, to rank 55th globally and second in Australia.
